🎓 Academy — whitelist advertising
A short practical course: what whitelist advertising is, why it brings brands a better ROI, and how you actually set up a campaign on TikTok and Meta.
5 lessons · ~20 min read
Whitelisting (also called "creator whitelisting" or "partnership ads") is a way of advertising where you pay to promote content a creator has posted — but the ad runs from their profile, not your brand’s. The result: the ad looks like an organic post rather than a conventional ad, while you keep full advertising control over it (budget, targeting, measurement).
1 What exactly is "whitelist advertising"?
Conventional advertising means the brand makes the creative itself (video, image, copy) and promotes it from its own profile. Whitelisting takes a different route: the creator posts the content (say a video where they test or recommend your product) and gives you permission to put money behind that same post — as a paid ad that still looks like their organic post, with their name, their profile picture and a "Paid partnership" label.
Why is this not the same as "boosting" a post?
With plain boosting (the "Promote" button under a post, for example) all you can do is add money for wider reach — you get no advanced targeting, no variant testing, and no access to the full ads interface. With whitelisting the creator formally authorizes your ad account to use that content in the real Ads Manager / Business Center, with everything that brings: interest and demographic targeting, A/B testing, retargeting, and conversion tracking.
Where it is used
- TikTok — the tool is called Spark Ads, authorization runs through a "Video/TikTok Post Authorization Code" or directly through TikTok Business Center.
- Meta (Instagram/Facebook) — the tool is called Partnership Ads (formerly "Branded Content Ads"); authorization happens through the branded content settings in the app.
- YouTube — a similar concept exists through Google Ads and the creator's rights to the video, but it is less standardized.
2 Why this brings a better ROI
Three reasons why whitelist campaigns often work better than classic ads run from a brand's profile:
1. Authenticity sells
The ad looks like a recommendation from a real person, not like a brand's marketing message. Research on the impact of UGC/creator content consistently shows that users trust content created by another person more than professionally shot commercials.
2. New, broader reach
A creator's organic post reaches only their followers. A whitelist ad, on the other hand, can use an advertising budget to target entirely new people who do not follow the creator at all — but match your buyer profile.
3. Full measurement and optimization
Because the ad runs through a real Ads Manager, you have access to the same data as in any paid campaign: clicks, conversions, cost per acquisition (CPA), return on ad spend (ROAS) — and you can optimize the campaign while it is running.
3 TikTok Spark Ads — step by step
What the creator does
- In the post settings (on TikTok) they turn on "Ad authorization", the authorization for advertising.
- They choose the validity period (from 7 to 365 days).
- They create an authorization code (or permission through TikTok Business Center, for a longer/larger collaboration) and send it to the brand.
What the brand does
- In TikTok Ads Manager (a business account is required) they enter the creator's code.
- From the authorized post they create a paid campaign — setting the targeting, the budget, the call-to-action button (CTA) and the landing page.
- They may not change the post itself (the video, the caption) — they can only promote it as it is.
4 Meta Partnership Ads — step by step
On Instagram/Facebook this feature is called Partnership Ads (formerly "Branded Content Ads"). The process is similar to TikTok, but runs through three steps:
- The creator enables access: in the Instagram/Facebook settings they turn on the tools for "branded content" and accept the brand's partnership invitation (partnership request).
- The brand builds the ad: once the permission is confirmed, the brand selects the creator's authorized post in Ads Manager and sets the targeting, the budget and the placements — just like in a classic campaign.
- The ad goes live from the creator's profile, with a visible "Paid partnership" label — not from the brand's page.
5 How to get started — a practical checklist
Before you launch your first whitelist campaign, check off the steps below:
Common mistakes
- Whitelisting content that did not work well organically at all — paid reach on weak creative rarely pays off.
- An authorization agreement that is too short or unclear, which causes the campaign to "go dark" in the middle of testing.
- The absence of conversion tracking — without it you only see reach and clicks, not the actual return.
- Editing the creator's content without permission — this violates the platform terms and the agreement with the creator.
